You have heard about the particle accelerator, right? A curious accident happened with such a device back in 1978.
A Russian scientist named Anatoli Bugorski who worked with the U-70 synchrotron – the biggest Soviet particle accelerator – stuck his head in it and survived. A piece of equipment wasn’t working properly and Bugorski was checking it when he accidently stuck his head in the way of the proton beam. He claimed he saw a bright flash but there was no pain.
After the accident the left part of his face was significantly swollen. The beam had burned his face, bone and the brain tissue. Experts believed he had received excessive radiation that no one could survive. However, Bugorski not only survived but no brain injuries developed and he even completed a Ph.D. Though he can’t hear with his left ear and the left part of his face is paralyzed, he lives a normal life with his wife and son.
