A very worried family searched for professional medical help when their 2-year-old son reached the staggering 70 pounds of total body weight. The morbidly obese toddler began suffering from sleep apnoea which made him suffocate in the middle of the night while fast asleep. Although the family took the matter seriously from the moment the toddler’s weight reached 46.2 pounds, he wasn’t put on a diet.
They took him to a hormone specialist who advised that the boy was put on a regular exercise regime as well as on a very strict diet. Unfortunately, the boy could not stop gaining weight and the physicians were unable to determine whether the family had enforced the diet or not. In a couple of months the weight gain continued and the boy developed sleep apnea as well as problems with his legs and overall movement. Then the worried parents decided to put him in a clinic for the morbidly obese. At the clinic the surgeons performed a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy that ultimately shrank his stomach to the size of a cucumber. The medical staff at the hospital admitted that this was the first case in history in which such a procedure was performed on a patient that young and with an overweight problem. The doctors are not exactly sure how this surgery would affect the boy’s development as he grows.
The 2-year-old boy needs to be under careful supervision till the rest of his life and would probably need another surgery in the future.
