The story of the people frozen in time in Pompeii is well known. I was horrified when I heard this story as a child.
In the year 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted violently, burying the entire town of Pompeii. The once busy city is forever frozen in exactly the way it was that fateful day when every man, woman, and child were buried in hot lava before they had the chance to escape.
The buildings and statues still stand which is amazing to see. There is no joy upon a tour of the city, however, because the people are also still there, casts of their bodies showing their faces, so terrified.
I can’t imagine what these people went through knowing they were about to die in such a horrific way.
5. Mount Everest Climber
Mount Everest serves as the final resting place for over 200 people. Because of the danger of the climb, retrieving the bodies is impossible. It poses too much risk to the rescuers.
Everest is the most challenging and deadly trek for any mountain climber, no matter how experienced they are. People do it for the thrill and bragging rights.
One of the deceased, forever frozen in time, is a man called green boots, named so for an obvious reason. He died on the mountain in 1996. In 2014, his body was supposedly missing, but in 2017, was confirmed to be there. It is believed, but not confirmed, that he is an Indian climber by the name of Tsewang Paljor.
6. Tattooed Siberian Princess
Another entry to the list from Siberia is the tattooed princess. She was found in the mountains, she was surrounded by riches, a makeup bag, and even a little cannabis.
She is thought to be one of the earliest known victims of breast cancer. When she was unearthed from the permafrost, she was observed to be thin and frail, but she had perfectly preserved tattoos. Two men were also found at the site, also bearing tattoos.
They are believed to be members of a clan from sometime in the 5th century BC.
7. Mountain woman
A woman found in a volcano, in an Incan burial ground, is so well preserved that doctors and scientists are baffled by her.
She is over 500 years old, but the preservation is so amazing she appears to be just a few weeks deceased. Her hair, skin and clothing are all intact. Her hands seem so lifelike that one man said they gave him chills.
She is an amazing specimen.
