For fans, it will be a long two years, but at least now we know for sure—director James Gunn has finally confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in 2020. Chances are, based on information from Marvel Studios, it will either be released on the 1st of May, 7th of August, or the 1st of November. If it isn’t released until the end of 2020, we’re looking at an almost three year wait, which is disappointing. But hey, at least we won’t have to wait until 2021, right?
The good news is that it will most likely come out on May 1st, so that it can compete with the other summer blockbusters.
Gunn, who directed the first two Guardian of the Galaxy films, confirmed the 2020 release during a Q&A on Twitter. He also wrote the first two films.

So we’ll have to wait, but at least we’ll be seeing Star Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Mantis, Gamora, and the rest of the characters we’ve come to know again before too, too long.
Gunn hasn’t been particularly forthcoming with details regarding the final movie in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, but he has revealed that the upcoming film will help set up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may be the final part of a trilogy, but that universe will likely go on for many, many years after it leaves the theaters.
As Gunn put it, the movie is the beginning of a “whole other element” of the cinematic universe that Marvel created. Gunn has also hinted at the fact that he has spoken with Marvel Studios’ president about spinoffs to the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Fans of the universe and comic books won’t be bored during their wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After all, coming out this year is Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Captain Marvel will be out next year, as will a sequel to Avengers: Infinity War. The sequel to Spiderman: Homecoming is also scheduled to be released in 2019, on the 5th of July.
More good news is that the Guardians of the Galaxy gang will show up in Avengers: Infinity War, which comes out on the 8th of May; they appeared in a trailer for the movie, which was released last year. There’s a pretty good chance that they’ll also be in the 2019 sequel, although that has yet to be confirmed.
So what else do we know about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? For one, the very popular character Adam Warlock is supposed to be a character, which should be exciting news for comic book fans.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which came out over the summer of 2014, was a huge hit for Marvel, which came as something of a surprise, which is probably why it took almost three years for the sequel to be released. The reason for the delay between the second movie and third movie is in part due to Gunn’s other projects, but it also has to do with the fact that the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is intertwined with the Avenger films, so Vol. 3 will be addressing what happens after the events of the films that will be coming before it.
In case you’re wondering if the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by the Walt Disney Company will impact Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn has stated that it will not. While the over $50 billion deal between the two companies will inevitably impact moviegoers and television watchers in drastic ways, the deal has yet to close; furthermore, Gunn insists that even if it does, the story of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not be impacted in any way. True, the possibility of the Marvel characters currently owned by FOX is an exciting thought for Marvel fans, but it won’t happen in the 2020 Guardians film.
The merger between Disney and Fox is currently awaiting regulatory approval. If it is approved, which seems likely at this point, that means all Marvel characters can be together in one universe, which is a truly exciting thought for fans.
For those completely unfamiliar with the Guardian of the Galaxy films, they star well-known names like Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn and Chris Pratt. The first film, which premiered in Hollywood in July of 2014 and was released on the 1st of August, made over $770 million worldwide and received critical acclaim. It was praised for the acting, direction, soundtrack, and pretty much everything else a superhero movie might be praised for. It actually grossed more than any other superhero film that year.
Because of the success of the first film, expectations were high for the second part of the Galaxy trilogy, which was set shortly after the events of the first part. It made well over $800 million dollars and was one of the top 10 grossing films of 2017. Like its predecessor, it received positive reviews; it particular, the visuals and cast were praised.
See you in the theaters in 2020!
