7. British Man First?

A British man, George Mallory, is arguably the most famous mountain climber from the U.K. in 1921, he took part in the Reconnaissance Expedition to Everest, which was an attempt by the British government to ascertain whether a climb to the top was possible.

The next year, he was on another climb when tragedy struck, and 7 of the Sherpas lost their lives in an avalanche.

The most notable thing about Mallory, though, is the fact that he just might have been the first to the top. He and climber Sandy Irvine claim to have been there before anyone else. There are studies being conducted on Mallory’s camera to see if that’s true. If so, Hillary and Norgay will lose that distinction.

8. Youngest Climber

There are age restrictions implemented for climbing Mount Everest now, but that wasn’t always so. Jordan Romero is an American climber who holds the distinction of being the youngest person to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest, at just 13 years old! He did it in 2010.

How amazing that someone so young had the physicality and endurance that a climb of this caliber demands!

Because of the new rules concerning the age of climbers being granted permits to climb, he will likely be the record holder for all of eternity.

How amazing! At thirteen, I could barely climb out of bed every day. This kid is amazing! He also completed the Seven Summits in 2011, after climbing Vinson Massif in Antarctica at the age of 15.

His current goal is to reach the highest point in each of the 50 states.

9. Youngest woman climber

Another 13 year old made it to the top of Everest as well. She is Malavath Poorna, and she is just a month older than Jordan Romero.

This does give her the honor of being the youngest female to ever reach the summit.

She was educated at Telengana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society. One of the educators, Dr. Kumar recognized her ability and made sure she was on the short list for a climb.

A movie depicting her adventure up the mountain will be put out in March of 2018. How amazing!
