The 17-year-old Angela Zhang earned $100, 000 in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Her project was called “Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells”.
Zhang created a nanoparticle which nowadays is referred to as “Swiss army knife” in the cancer treatment area, meaning her invention has numerous useful applications. Using the drug salinomycin Zhang’s nanoparticle is brought to tumors. The nanoparticle not only has the ability to kill cancer cells, but it also helps with MRI imaging.
Zhang started working on her project in 2009 and spent more than thousand hours on it. She wants to continue her studies in Physics or Biomedical Engineering. Just imagine what we could expect from her in the future if she managed to create this nanoparticle at the age of 17!
