Most of us have heard and many of us have said the famous wedding vows that begin and end: “To have and to hold… in sickness and in health, until death do us part”. Beautiful traditional vows between people who want to spend their lives together.
Unfortunately, married couples often fail to keep those promises made on their happiest day.
One stunning example of an almost unthinkable betrayal of a spouse is the case of the Batista family.
The happy couple – Richard and Dawnell probably said those very vows in front of their priest and witnesses on the day of their wedding back in 1990.
Unfortunately, one decade later, the wife, Dawnell, became very ill and was in critical need of a kidney transplant. Following two unsuccessful transplants from donors, after discovering he was a 1 in 700,000 match Dr. Richard Batista offered to donate one of his own kidneys to save his wife of more than 10 years.
In 2001 the surgery went in place and the kidney transplant was successful, and Dr. Richard Batista proved to be true to the vow to stay by his wife “in sickness and in health”.
Dawnell on the other hand had other ideas. Just four years after her husband risked his own life and health to save her, the couple entered a bitter divorce battle. The reason for this separation was the fact that Mrs. Batista had decided to “move on” and had cheated with her physical therapist. She suffered an injury while practicing martial arts and needed a therapy. Later on she even denied her former husband access to their three children.
Today, Dr. Richard Batista is seeking redemption in the form of 1.5 million dollars for the kidney donated…and for the disappointment caused by his estranged and unfaithful wife.
Well, he never said that he regret donating his kidney. He was and still is a brave and dedicated to his family man. I salute this guy, because risking his life to save his beloved one is really every REAL man should do.
