Car accidents during nighttime occur extremely often. They are mainly caused by drivers deprived of sleep, who fall into a microsleep phase and don’t realize they are actually sleeping.
The microsleep is a phase of sleep which occurs among sleep deprived people. The occurrence causes the person to lose focus and awareness of his/her surroundings for several seconds. The microsleep phase can continue from a tiny fraction of a second up to 30 seconds. Throughout this period of time the sufferer is actually sleeping without realizing it. During this lack of consciousness the drivers don’t have any awareness of the road and the situation, and are more likely to be involved in or cause accidents.
Apart from lack of sleep, microsleep can occur for to a variety of reasons, including side effects of drug abuse.
