Usually, when you hear about how someone was suspended from school, some kind of violence happened, or it’s to do with bullying. However, Carey Burgess was suspended for a very different reason.
Carey Burgess is 17 years old, and was told by her high school that her skirt was too short, for which she was then suspended. Carey didn’t take this lying down though, and after posting on Facebook, her story has been shared thousands of times.
As student body president at Beaufort High School, which is located in South Carolina, you would think that she was fairly confident with the rules, however, one staff member at her high school reported that her skirt was more than 3 inches above her knees, which is against the school’s dress code.
Although initially upset by the incident, she took to Facebook to share what had happened. As she was returning to a class from a trip to the vending machine, a teacher pulled her over, and told her that because her skirt was too short, she must go to the in-school suspension, before she would then have to leave the premises.
Thank you for letting me know that while I may think that I am dressing up for my Teacher Cadet lesson, I am in fact dressing to go to a night club or the whore house.
She also goes on to say that the dress code actually makes her feel ashamed of herself and her body, and calls some of the staff incompetent and sexist.
Despite the action that was taken, the school’s Principal even commented on the message on Facebook, actually complementing her for her writing skills. Apparently the image that Carey uploaded did not reflect what she was really wearing, and the staff involved did not do anything wrong in this incident.
