Ever since 1998 Yu Youzhen has been working as a street cleaner on the streets of Wuhan. The Chinese woman, who is in her 50s, is actually a millionaire acting like no other millionaire you’ve heard of.
In 2008 Yu became the owner of 17 apartments, which have been estimated to be worth around $1.5 million in USD. However, she doesn’t want to “eat away her fortune” and to “sit around idly”. Instead, she wants to do something meaningful and to teach her children a valuable lesson. That’s why despite her millions she’s getting early and going to work 6 days a week. And instead of sitting in a comfortable office she’s actually sweeping the streets and emptying the dirty trash cans with her less fortunate colleagues. It’s unclear how she became a millionaire and where she got the money from, because she’s refusing to speak about this. Instead, the woman is focusing on showing people that hard work means more than just earning money. According to official reports, the woman receives a poor salary of only 1,420 yuan a month (around $227 in USD).

Ever since her story caught the attention of the local media Yu Youzhen has been seen as a national symbol of determination and hard work for Chinese people everywhere. The woman claims that she had set her sight on not becoming lazy and not letting her fortune get to her head when she became a millionaire. Another reason for her working as a street cleaner is the fact that she doesn’t want her children to become spoiled. The woman is a role model not only for her kids, but also for the locals, who praise her for her extraordinary choice of a life style.
