Two people were arrested and charged for stealing $18,000,000 worth of maple syrup

Between summer 2011 and summer 2012, five people managed to steal $18 million worth of maple syrup from a warehouse located in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford near Quebec, Canada.

The group allegedly responsible for the huge heist was believed to consist of four men and a woman. After a year and a half long investigation, Canadian police arrested 34 year old Richard Vallières and 39 year old Avik Caron in relation to the theft. The two men were charged with fraud, theft, conspiracy and handling stolen goods. The police are still on the lookout for the other three suspects.

When the theft was discovered it was originally believed that the stolen syrup was worth $30 million, though further investigation put the value at a still-hefty $18 million. The police plunged into a long and thorough investigation covering Canada and the US and issued over 40 search warrants. Nearly 300 people from the production, sale and transportation offices were questioned. Tons of items were confiscated until the police finally rounded up a total of 5 people they suspected of being involved with the heist.
