On August 16th of 2015, the granddaughter of the renowned actor Morgan Freeman was stabbed and killed in Manhattan, New York.
Her name was E’Dena Hines, and she was 33 years old at the time of her death. The alleged killer is her former boyfriend Lamar Davenport.
E’Dena is Morgan Freeman’s granddaughter from his first marriage, which was to Jeannette Adair Bradshaw.
Cristina Aviles was a witness to the fatal attack; she is a nursing student. The woman has told the court that Hines was with friends of hers when she was approached by Lamar. At the time, Lamar lived with E’Dena. The fatal incident occurred in the Washington Heights area.

Cristina told the court how the pair had an argument in public, and after that Lamar stabbed E’Dena 25 times. As E’Dena was on the ground, she asked Lamar why he was doing what he was doing to her. Those were her final words. She asked: “why are you doing this?” That question was posed as she was dying on the ground.
At one point, Cristina said, he was on top of E’Dena and restraining her. He was stopping her from escaping his grip.
Cristina said that she phoned for the police; Lamar was allegedly shouting things about releasing the devil out of E’Dena. It was then that he pulled out a knife.
Lamar allegedly stated that he had to exorcise a demon out of E’Dena.
Cristina said that there were “multiple stabs”. There were stabs to the back and then to her chest—and then to her neck.

According to media sources, Cristina graphically detailed how Lamar allegedly raised his weapon to the level of his forehead and then plunged it into the victim roughly 25 times. Cristina said that the victim was on her stomach, but managed to flip over. That is when she was stabbed in the chest. E’Dena was trying to get away from her attacker by kicking and pushing him.
He would stop his assault after E’Dena stopped moving and was still.

According to reports, Lamar was in a drug-induced psychosis.
Cristina said that she and the victim’s friends wanted to intervene, but they were all scared that Lamar would also attack them.
In a call she made to 911, Cristina told the operator that she could not perform CPR on the victim because Lamar was straddling E’Dena.
Cristina, who now lives in Miami but lived in the Bronx at the time, attended the trial because she wanted to help E’Dena. She said that she wants justice—like everybody else.

When his granddaughter died, the Oscar-winning actor said that the world will not know of E’Dena’s talent and artistry.
It will not know how much she actually had to offer.
E’Dena—like Morgan Freeman—was also an actor.
E’Dena was the daughter of the award-winning actor’s stepdaughter. He adopted the stepdaughter when he married her mother.
He would go on to divorce his first wife and marry another woman in 1984, but they would eventually adopt the victim and raise her together.
It seems likely that Lamar’s attorneys will argue that their client should not be held responsible for the death because of either mental illness or the effects of the drugs he was on. Prosecutors are expected to argue that Lamar was lucid enough to form an intent to kill E’Dena and that the rage he was experiencing was personal. He was, according to the prosecutors, in control of his actions when he stabbed the victim.
In addition to winning an Academy Award in 2005, Morgan Freeman has also received several Oscar nominations. He has also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award. He first grew famous as a result of being part of the cast of “The Electric Company”, which was a children’s program back in the 1970’s.
He appeared in films such as “Driving Miss Daisy”, “Invictus”, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, “Deep Impact”, “Wanted”, “Bruce Almighty”, “Now You See Me”, and “Lucy”.
He also appeared on the American soap opera “Another World”.
