In a recent poll where people could add their own option, and vote for the top English actor of all time, dead or alive, the late Alan Rickman has won the coveted top spot.

Sadly, the iconic actor passed away last year after a battle with cancer at the young age of just 69. In his time on earth, he definitely made a huge impact on so many people, young and old, with the roles that he played.

Rickman starred in many movies over the course of his acting career, including Die Hard, Sweeney Todd, Dogma, and my favorite Christmas movie of all time, Love Actually. But I am sure that we can all surmise that his huge, younger fan base came about solely due to his portrayal of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. When an actor plays the same character through a whole franchise, the fans really feel like they know him inside and out. His perfect delivery, and deep timbered voice both helped to win the honor of best English actor of all time.

When you think of all the wonderful actors to come to us from Great Britain, there is some really stiff competition. For him to take the top spot really says something about how loved that he was. It was never more apparent than when he died, and condolences and messages of sadness poured in from all over the world. We definitely lost a great actor that day.

The runner up was Sir Ian McKellen, who starred in another very successful franchise, Lord of the Rings. Rounding out the top five were Sir Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Daniel Day Lewis. Sir Patrick Stewart came in at a respectable number six.

Looking at the rest of the list, I’m sure everyone’s favorite English actor is included. A lot of old-school actors such as Laurence Olivier, Cary Grant, Christopher Lee, and Ben Kingsley were in the top 20. Alex Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi was on there as well. This list keeps getting better and better!

Doctor Who actor, Peter Capaldi came in at number 79, and Colin Firth, who also stars in Love Actually, among so many others, came in at a respectable number 17. Even the late rocker David Bowie holds a spot on the list, coming in at number 67. Who didn’t love his portrayal as the goblin King in the cult classic, Labyrinth? Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, and Benedict Cumberbatch were also included, which comes as no surprise to me.

What a great honor for everyone on the list, but especially for Alan Rickman to be placed at the top among all of these fine men who also practiced the craft. Congrats to the late Mr. Rickman!
